Week 3 Blog

I chose  "Cross Road Blues" by Robert Johnson. Johnson has a very interesting and unique voice. It gives a fun vibe to the song and adds flavor to the backing which is very simple and repetitive. I couldn't really understand what Johnson was saying but the truth is you don't really have to if you want to enjoy the song. When you do look up the lyrics however it gives new meaning to the song. Going back to the guitar it is a very repetitive part but it adds a lot to the vocals. It gives it the vibe of an old time country or a live performance outside your local saloon. I think the guitar also adds contrast to what the lyrics are saying. In my opinion the song isn't giving the most happy feel but it definitely doesn't feel sad. In my opinion it reminds me of the songs prisoners would sing in old movies while they worked out or did manual labor. They aren't necessarily extremely sad or depressed but they don't want to be doing what they are doing and are singing to keep themselves entertained. The key of the song, the lyrics and the just the overall vibe just gives off the feel of someone who isn't depressed or extremely sad, but isn't happy with the direction their life is going.

  1. I agree you don’t need to understand what they’re saying as long as you like how it sounds, just think about when were kids we know the words but we don’t understand what they mean and yet we still like the songs because they sound good and put us in a good mood!
