Week 4 Blog
I chose Caravan by Duke Ellington. I am a huge jazz lover and listening to Caravan and all its different versions always makes my day. The rhythm section starting off the piece just sets the vibe for the entire piece. The tenor saxophone entrance introducing the melody allows the rest of the band to feel that style for the rest of the piece as well. The trombone then helps keep that theme and style with the clarinet and piano accompaniment behind it. Overall the piece allows everyone to show off their skills with improvisation and written solos. The clarinet with its brighter sound and the trombone with its warm sound create such good contrast within the piece. The soloists also never gives up on that original style the tenor set at the tenor set at the beginning. The crunchy chords after the solos also make for an interesting melodic section where even the slightest tuning issue could ruin the whole piece.
