Week 9 Blog
This week I chose "25 or 6 to 4" by Chicago. To start off, I love the repeating guitar rhythm that goes on throughout the whole piece. Also the repeating riffs in the band just fit so well with the lyrics. The was written by Robert Lamm, who is the keyboard player and singer for Chicago. The song is literally about him trying to write a song which honestly I find really funny. Lamm explained later that when he was living with hippies in the Hollywood Hills he could see the whole city so while trying to explain how he writes his songs he wrote the lyric 'waiting for the break of day, searching for something to say, flashing lights against the sky'. The flashing lights was actually a neon sign he could see across the city. The song title came from the fact that it was 25 or 6 to 4 a.m. in the morning and Lamm just simply needed a line to finish his chorus. I just find it really interesting how a hit like this was written so randomly and honestly pretty carelessly. The simplicity of the lyrics and background track shows that it doesn't take much to make a hit.
This is such a great song! I did not realize that is how the lead singer came up with the song.; very creative! I agree with you when you said that it doesn't take much to make a hit song; it is very true! This was definitely a hit song back in the day. What a time to be alive!
ReplyDeleteI honestly love this song so much. I think there are qualities to this song that are just so hard to find in modern day music. For example, I think guitar rifts are a dying art that aren’t being exploited to its possibilities. It’s frustrating to hear amazing classic songs such as this that are held together with talented artists rather than synthesized modern music.
