 I listened to the episode "Why do new Christmas songs fail". Christmas songs are some of the most successful and highest grossing songs in the industry but somehow few new songs get into the popular mix. Mariah Carey's "All I Want for Christmas" is consistently getting to the top of the charts every Christmas despite new songs coming out every year. This song is 27 years old yet it feels new due to most of the popular Christmas songs being from the 50s and 60s. The next song they talk about is "Rockin' Around the Christmas Tree" from the 50s. The age gap between these two songs really shows how hard it is for a new Christmas song to break through. One of the reasons they give for this is the nostalgia we get from the oldies. It gives a feeling from our childhood that no new song can give. We want to feel like that 5 year old waking up on Christmas morning wanting to see what Santa got us this year.
